Centerton Sports Field Gets a Winning Upgrade

The Centerton Stadium in Hankey underwent renovations over the past two years and was officially launched and handed over to the Municipality after the completion of its first phase. The facility now presents itself impressively, though further work is still required. It was designed as a multipurpose venue to accommodate soccer, rugby, tennis, and volleyball, with plans to also include athletics in the future.

This renovation was made possible through a successful partnership between Amandla Omoya Trust, Kouga Municipality, and the local community. The Trust contributed R1 million towards the renovations, while the Municipality supported the project by providing its grading machinery, saving the costs of external hiring. The community played a central role by planting the grass for the soccer field and committing to the care of the stadium, fostering a strong sense of ownership.

Looking ahead, the Trust intends to complete the outstanding developments to ensure the stadium can be used to its full potential. The renovation initiative was inspired by a previous community engagement meeting, where residents emphasised the importance of creating spaces for youth to channel their energy and skills productively, while reducing the risks of negative influences.

Artisan Training Development Programme

Following the previous community meeting, the Trust has responded to the proposal to initiate an Artisan Programme for unemployed adults within our communities. To bring this to life, we partnered with a TVET College based in Gqeberha. Together, we conducted a tour of the college facilities to align their training capacity with the skills needs identified by community members.

The key practical skills highlighted include carpentry, bricklaying, electrical work, and plumbing. The College warmly welcomed the partnership, and the Trustees have committed R2 million over a three-year period to support this initiative.

Recruitment has recently been completed in the communities of Hankey, Lourie, and Weston. The programme will progressively expand to other communities over time. Each training area will accommodate about 12 participants.

Adding to the excitement, the Trust and the TVET are in progress of finalising agreement with various Kouga Municipality department to absorbing all programme graduates into internship and/or apprenticeship programmes of the Municipality.
